Science / History
Like the dinosaurs, the mammals of the Ice Age are now extinct. But unlike Tyrannosaurus and Diplodocus, creatures such as the sabertooth cat actually lived alongside human beings. And even 32,000 years ago, people were interested in creating art that reflected the world around them. It is this art — the amazingly preserved cave and rock paintings from Lascaux, Chauvet and other sites around the world — that provides this guided tour of the Ice Age world and the animals that inhabited it. Curious young readers will be captivated by the ancient paintings and the realistic illustrations of creatures including the sabertooth cat, mammoth and woolly rhino.
PAUL G. BAHN has a doctorate in archaeology from Cambridge University, where he specialized in the prehistory of the Pyrenees. He is the author of Journey Through the Ice Age and Mammoths (with Adrian Lister).
ADRIAN LISTER has a doctorate in zoology from Cambridge University. He is now a professor at University College, London, where he teaches Paleobiology.
